Calafralina is a wonderful stone Tuscan villa set in the heart of Chianti. Comprising a main house and a cluster of cottages, it offers sophisticated lodgings best suited to five couples who wish to explore wine country, or mixed groups with older children. Its position, halfway between the pretty towns of Castellina and Radda, means you will have the chance to sample a taste of the local lifestyle. The main villa houses a large, comfortable open-plan living and dining area with full-height modern windows and doors to the garden on three sides. The comfy bedrooms are housed in three cottages, each with direct access from the garden, ensuring independence and privacy. Outside, the pretty walled patio shaded by olive trees is just perfect for an al-fresco dinner. The expansive gardens, including an orchard and an olive grove, feature mature trees offering shade, while the ping-pong table and bocce court will keep everyone amused. And the large private pool, set in its own lawned area, must be one of the best places to pull up a lounger and contemplate the gorgeous views. Our Thoughts This is a truly wonderful villa – there’s just something about the living-dining area, with its three sides of glass, that puts guests among the trees and really brings the outside in. There’s so much space, too, and the arrangement across four buildings means it’s ideal for a group of couples, who want to socialise but to be able to retreat to an independent space. Notes Five bedrooms (the second bedroom annexe is not on the floorplan). Five bathrooms, all en-suite. All bedrooms have tea- and coffee-making facilities and are independently accessed from the garden via glass doors. In the Annexe 3 bedrooms there are no other windows. This villa is recommended for the warmer months because there is no direct access between the various buildings without crossing the garden. The owner has a private holiday villa on the property, but rarely uses it. The pool is reserved for guests only Maximum number of guests includes children and infants. Pool The large pool is at the end of the garden and is set in a terracotta-tiled deck. It is fenced with a temporary structure, making it safer for children or pets. The water is accessed via metal steps and there is a diving board at the deep end. It is 15x7 metre, 1-2.3 metres deep pool and open from May to October, weather permitting.
